los angeles - west hollywood: gardens of taxco

tommy feasts at gardens of taxco in weho...

cheese quesadilla with guacamole

albondigas (meatball soup)

cheese enchilada
beef taco

garlic shrimp

beans, rice, guacamole

chicken in cilantro cream sauce with beans and rice

bananas and cream
cream sherry

tommy says: no written menu, the waiter just tells you what the dishes are (very entertaining, especially when he gets to the chicken that tastes like it was borrrrrrrrrrn in the sauce!). choose an entree, the other courses will just magically appear. all the food was fantastically amazing, even the unassuming cheese quesadilla tasted really good. favorites were the shrimp and beef taco. come hungry (its a lot of food) and come often (its muy deliciosa y sabrosa).

los angeles - west hollywood: taste

tommy gets a taste of tastein weho...

bread and hummus

prosciutto, black mission fig jam, prosciutto, gorgonzola and scallions pizzetta

white truffle oil and mushroom mac & cheese

crispy parmesan chicken paillard: chicken breast, potato purée, white gravy, baby arugula salad, red onion jam

cumin spiced pork chop with mojo sauce and sugar snap peas, and a side of white truffle oil and mushroom mac & cheese

tommy says: the complimentary hummus was the best part of the meal. it had a great bright, fresh, and lemony flavor! the flavors on the pizzetta were good, but the crust wasn't that great. mac & cheese was so-so and disappointing. the chicken paillard was bland, but the mashed potatoes were quite good. the pork chop was pretty good as well.

los angeles - west hollywood: ronin izakaya bistro

tommy enjoys a tasty meal at ronin in weho...

beef tataki washu beef: seared washu beef, julienned asian pear, ronin ponzu sauce

taco shimi: seared ahi sashimi, avocado, shitake mushrooms, japanese relish, tortilla chips

duck with berry sauce

blue crab cake: blue crab, wasabi tartar sauce

grilled lamb chops: new zealand rack of lamb, oba jelly

yuzu custard: yuzu granita and fresh fruit

tommy says: all of the dishes were solid. the crabcake was probably the most disappointing. didn't look like they used jumbo lump crab meat, and there wasn't anything special about it. all of the meats were cooked perfectly, and the flavors were great. the salad with the washu beef made that dish, as did the jelly for the lamb. the custard was perfectly smooth and quite rich, and the perfect amount of sweet. the yuzu granita was interesting, but it didn't seem to go well with the custard. it would be great on its own though. all in all a very satifying meal! oh, and free parking lot in the back!

west hollywood: lucques

tommy has easter dinner at lucques on melrose...

bread, almonds, olives, butter, and salt

spring salad: mache, baby carrots, asparagus, and sugar snap peas

grilled lamb sirloin with fennel bread salad, roasted lemons, and mint chutney

sauteed sand dabs with celery root puree, chive blossoms, and sunflower seed brown butter

vanilla pavlova with spring berries, creme fraiche, and crushed pistachios

tommy says: overall, underwhelming... the sand dabs were good, but the lamb was cold... perhaps its unfair to judge based on a prix fixe menu, but there will be some hesitation before trying lucques again...
