singapore: red house seafood

tommy drowns in seafood at red house seafood...

braised spinach tofu & honshimeji mushroom topped with crisp conpy

crispy cereal prawns

black pepper crab

chili crab

steamed whole scallop with minced garlic

steamed scottish bamboo clam with minced garlic

tommy says:  what a great meal!  tofu was very tasty and had good texture.  black pepper crab was very, very peppery and spicy.  chili crab wasn't that spicy and on the sweet side, but had good flavor - be sure to sop up the sauce with the rolls.  cereal prawns were just ok.  favorites were the clam and scallop - the garlic flavor was so good!  beer is not cheap here, and this actually may have been the priciest meal eaten in singapore, but no regrets - yummm!!

los angeles: son of a gun

tommy cannot get enough of son of a gun...

gloucester scallop, yuzu kosho, pickled shiitake

ora king salmon, jerk spice, kiwi, palm sugar vinaigrette, habanero

lemonfish poke, black radish escabeche, citrus, crispy sunchoke

uni burrata, button mushroom, yuzu

lobster roll, celery, lemon aioli

black sea bream, pho fumet, herbs, lime, bok choy

shrimp toast sandwich, herbs, hoisin, sriracha mayo

skate wing, baby broccoli, mascarpone, pancetta vinaigrette

frozen lime yogurt, graham crumble, toasted meringue

tommy says:  scallop, salmon, lemonfish were all beautifully delicious, perfect amounts of acid on all.  the lobster roll is pretty much perfection on a plate, except for the size - next time i'm getting a dozen and not sharing.  sea bream broth was fantastically flavorful.  shrimp toast was a bit on the greasy side, but that wouldn't stop me from ordering it again.  dessert was a deconstructed version of a lemon meringue pie, but so much better.  what is there left to say?  son of a gun is amazeballs.

oahu - haeliwa: macky's shrimp truck

tommy goes to macky's shrimp truck...

butter garlic shrimp

tommy says: half orders are no offered here.  the butter garlic shrimp is good, but not as garlicky as i was hoping.  shrimp were a bit overdone.  tasty, but there is better.

oahu - haleiwa: giovanni's shrimp truck

tommy can't get enough garlic at giovanni's shrimp truck...

garlic hot dog, half order hot & spicy shrimp, half order shrimp scampi

tommy says: there is a reason the apparent o.g. shrimp truck is considered the best - because it is. the garlic hot dog was tasty! why don't more places do that?  shrimp scampi is wonderfully garlicky, and the hot & spicy is garlicky and spicy with a nice tang to it. shrimp were nicely cooked.

oahu - kaneohe: dean's drive inn

tommy checks out dean's drive inn in kaneohe...

ahi belly with shoyu ginger sauce

half rack of lamb

tommy says: both the fish and lamb were done quite well!  the ginger sauce on the fish is more of a relish as it is quite chunky, and the ginger flavor is very strong.  the lamb was tender and juicy.  the mac salad was just ok.

san gabriel valley - san gabriel: newport seafood

tommy dives in at newport seafood in san gabriel...

crispy fried squid with salt and pepper

crab with ginger and green onion

beef loc lac (french style)

newport special lobster

tommy says: the lobster and the beef loc lac were the standouts.  the squid was good, but nothing remarkably different from a well done calamari.  the crab was also good, but couldn't stand up to the lobster.  the lobster meat was sweet and tender, and the sauce had a nice mild peppery kick.  the beef was tender and when dipped in the lime juice with salt and pepper, sublime!  hands down the best version of this dish around.

tommy checks out the happy hour at ocean ave seafood in santa monica...

ceviche

oysters on the half shell

chicago: shaw's crab house

tommy gets fishy at shaw's crab house oyster bar...

maryland style crab cake

sauteed ecuadorian talapia with sweet pineapple glaze and mango, apple & radish salad

vanilla creme brulee

tommy says: the crab cake was pretty good, but the talapia fell short. there wasn't much glaze on the fish, so it was lacking flavor and overall was a disappointment. the creme brulee was good and had flecks of vanilla which was great.

nyc - murray hill: pasticcio

tommy kicks off his ny tour with some italian at pasticcio

grouper pantelleria: filet of grouper sauteed in wine with lemon, garlic, and capers

chocolate cake

tommy gets a little tongue action from a fellow diner

tommy says: the grouper wasn't bad and had a nice essence of lemon and the chocolate cake was actually decent, however, in a city that has such an extensive selection of italian food, this may be one to pass on...
